Due to the amazing advancements of composite materials, we can create beautiful restorations whilst removing minimal amounts of tooth structure. A common question we get asked is about bevelling cavity margins – when do you do it and why? Bevelling is useful to create seamless margins for our composite restorations – hiding the where the filling meets the natural tooth. As a general rule of thumb, if the cavity encroaches onto the line angle of the tooth, then we advocate bevelling the cavity margin to obtain a seamless finish. However, if the cavity margin is distant from the line angle a bevel is not usually required and suitable aesthetics can be obtained. See the case below to prove it!
